The Astor is pleased to present her exhibition. “The Art of Maya Smith\,” through November 2025. \n“Most of my art is of birds and animals because\, since I was a child\, they have been my friends and teachers. I create my art from this deep love and connection to nature. I have always had an attention to detail and colour\, and this is shown in my art\, which I create using either colored pencils\, pastels or oils. I love the fine detail I can get working with colored pencils\, and I often work 8 to 12 layers deep\, allowing the different colours to build up using translucent\, oil-based Prismacolor pencils. I also love the rich colours I get with pastels\, since they are basically pure pigment\, and over time\, I have learned to achieve the detailed work I desire with pastels. She began her artistic journey in the field of graphic art and now focuses primarily on painting. She grew up in Cape Breton and currently lives on the beautiful south shore of Nova Scotia. Her works are available from her home gallery in Brooklyn\, at the Gallery on Lincoln in Lunenburg and ArtSpace 106 in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Her current show\, Colours of the Atlantic\, includes her classic abstract realism water scenes\, some with a skyline and some without\, and a couple of experimental pieces. \n“I want my art to catch your eye.
