    ONCE UPON A TIME IN A CINEMA is set in a small-town cinema during one eventful Friday night screening from hell. Over the course of one evening, the film follows the travails of beleaguered cinema owner Earl Clancy (Colin Morgan) as he faces a myriad of disasters, any one of which could sink him. Drawing from writer/director David Gleeson's own experience growing up in a family of cinema owners where his father's 78-year career marked the longest in the cinema business in Ireland, if not the world, this film is a love letter to a peculiarly Irish cinema experience, which was as much about connecting with people as it was about the movie.

    eniors Creating is a brand new Astor Academy program for seniors.  We will be offering free art workshops with professional artists to allow seniors to engage in the arts while connecting with other seniors in our community.  Each month we will have a new workshop series.

    Art supplies, tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.  

    We are excited to be starting off with a 4 week painting session with Beth Lenco.

    Life Drawing was started by Roger Savage. Weekly studio sessions provide the opportunity for lay and professional visual artists of our region to practice and improve their drawing and observation skills. Participants are from communities along the South Shore. This program costs $20 per session to provide payment to the models used in the drawing sessions.

    The Astor is excited to welcome Kristal D'Amato Art Show - Beyond The First Glance in our Upstairs Gallery for the month of October.  

    The camera often reveals details that disappear when we take in scenes all at once: the textures worn into driftwood by the tide, the glow of light across a shell, the reflections hidden in still water, or the unexpected arrangement of ordinary objects. These small discoveries have become the starting point for much of my work.

    Curiosity leads to every piece I create. Sometimes it ends with a photograph. Sometimes that photograph becomes something entirely new - a mandala that uncovers patterns hidden within nature, or a watercolour interpretation that explores the same scene through softness, colour and emotion. Each transformation asks the same question: What else is hidden here?

    Timothy Gillespie is a Winnipeg native who produces sculptures and wall pieces in a variety of media - - including ceramics, steel, cellulose, mixed media and assemblage, including industrial elements from his South Coast Studio in Queens County, Nova Scotia. His collection of work spanning 3 decades can be viewed in this exhibit.
